Our retail volunteers are at the heart of our Lifeline shops. They create welcoming spaces, connect with the community, and raise vital funds for our crisis support and suicide prevention services. Every shift helps support Lifeline’s 24-hour 13 11 14 crisis line, as well as our local face-to-face counselling, financial counselling and community support programs.
No retail experience? No problem. Bring your positive attitude, team spirit and friendly customer focus—we’ll provide the rest.

What type of work does a store volunteer do?
Our volunteers help with a wide variety of tasks to keep the store running smoothly. These may include:
- Merchandising: organising, tagging goods, and creating attractive store displays
- Customer service: assisting shoppers and working behind the register
- Sorting donated goods
- Store maintenance
Is there a dress code for store volunteers?
We ask our volunteers to dress neatly, and to wear closed toe shoes to ensure they stay safe.
Do you provide training?
Yes. For volunteers, we provide an in-store induction and on-site “on the job” training for the tasks you are undertaking.
Could volunteering lead to employment within stores?
Yes! Positions occasionally become available in store.
Are there minimum/maximum hours required for volunteering?
To help volunteers build a meaningful connection with their store team, we ask for a minimum commitment of one 3-hour shift per fortnight.
Most volunteers choose to work a regular 3-hour shift each week, and there may be opportunities to take on additional shifts depending on availability.
I'm not an Australian citizen. Can I volunteer?
Maybe—you must be eligible to volunteer in Australia in accordance with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) guidelines. If you’re not an Australian citizen, please ensure your visa type allows you to volunteer. It’s your responsibility to ensure you’re eligible to volunteer in Australia before you contact us.
