Helping create safer, more connected school communities
Young people today are under pressure— at home, at school, and online. Teachers, parents and caregivers all play a vital role in helping them feel safe, connected and cared for.
Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among young people aged 15–24 in Australia. When teachers, caregivers, parents and school staff can recognise the early signs that a young person is struggling and respond with confidence, they are better placed to connect them with the support they need. Early intervention and a whole-school approach to wellbeing can make a meaningful difference in keeping young people safe.
Support for students
When things feel hard, Lifeline is here to help. We offer affordable counselling for students aged 15 and over, practical resources and guidance on where to get support, including Lifelines 24/7 crisis support line when you need someone to talk to.
Support for teachers
As a teacher or staff member, you play an important role in noticing when a young person may need help. With the right knowledge and confidence, you can respond early and help connect students to the support they need.
Support for parents
Worrying about your child’s mental health can be scary. You’re not alone. We’re here to help with guidance, support and practical next steps.
Supporting your school community at every stage
When it comes to student wellbeing, schools need practical, compassionate wellbeing support that works. Our school support model helps teachers, staff and families identify and respond with confidence — from building resilience and recognising when a young person may be struggling, to offering support during and after a crisis.
Our work with school communities includes:
- Prevention: Building mental health literacy, emotional resilience, and coping strategies
- Early identification: Training to support teachers and staff to recognise the warning signs of a student in distress or at risk of suicide
- Intervention: Guidance on responding to students in distress
- Postvention: Support for schools after a suicide or critical incident to help recovery and reduce further risk
