Managing Emotions Support Group

Everyone feels sad or down sometimes – but if you’ve been struggling with this for some time, it could be that you’re experiencing depression.

Managing Emotions (depression and anxiety) support group

From isolation to connection.

Is this group right for me?

It’s a skills and support group for adults with mild to moderate anxiety, depression and/or stress.

The Managing Emotions support group brings people together who are experiencing mild to moderate anxiety, depression and/or stress whilst learning strategies to manage strong feelings and emotions.

Anxiety can be triggered by lots of different things. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Relationship problems
  • Personal or family illness
  • Death of a loved one
  • Conflict at work or home
  • Financial problems
  • Work or study pressure
  • Job loss or insecurity

That said, sometimes it can also be hard to pinpoint the cause of anxiety at all.

Anxiety affects people in a range of ways, and contrary to what some people think, it’s not ‘all in your head’ – some symptoms are very physical! Here are some of the common tell-tale signs:

  • A racing heart
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Confusion
  • Feeling faint or dizzy
  • Panic attacks
  • Mounting feelings of distress or nausea
  • Irrational fears or phobias
  • Trembling
  • Thoughts like “I’m not going to be able to cope with this…”

The support group helps members understand their anxiety, identify triggers, and find ways to manage it.

Through relaxation, mindfulness and breathing exercises, you will learn how to develop the thought patterns and personal behaviours that will enable you to minimise and manage your anxiety. This includes learning to eliminate unhelpful thought patterns and deal with worry.

How our support group works

This six-week group will cover the following:

  • Mindfulness and Relaxation Skills – learn how to disconnect from the chaos of life and reconnect with yourself
  • Manage thoughts and feelings – learn coping strategies for strong emotions
  • Distress Tolerance – learn how to manage distress in a healthy way or
  • Active Resilience – learn skills to help deal with challenging life circumstances
  • Assertive Communication – develop new skills when relating to others

Open to anyone* experiencing mild to moderate depression and/or anxiety, our support group allows members to discuss what they’re going through with other people who really understand. Our participants find that being part of the group, sharing insights, and learning from the experiences of others, really does help.

Our group also provides members with practical strategies for coping with depression and anxiety – all of which are based on tried-and-tested practices such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), mindfulness techniques and Solution Focused Brief Therapy. With the help our facilitators, group members also learn new ways to relate to others, and develop greater strength and resilience.
